First monument of its kind in the world: sculpture of Blofeld — the legendary opponent of James Bond presented in Gdynia

At the Nadmorski Hotel, a full-size plaster model of the future sculpture of Ernst Stavro Blofeld, the legendary adversary of James Bond, was unveiled. If funding is secured, a bronze figure will be installed on the waterfront as early as 2027.

Although Blofeld is a fictional character, his «connection» to Gdynia appeared in Ian Fleming’s novels: the author of «Operation Thunderball» indicated that the villain was born here in 1908. This forms the basis of the project idea conceived by a group of Bond fans from Gdynia and Gdańsk.

The organizers describe the monument as a new tourist idea for the city. According to them, there is currently no similar monument — neither to Bond nor to Blofeld — in the world.

— We want this to be a joint project of the residents and everyone who feels connected to Gdynia, — the initiators note.

The project has already received support from the city, which allocated a plot for the installation. However, the production and bronze casting are estimated to cost around 270,000 zlotys and are being financed through public fundraising.

The sculpture depicts Blofeld in a chair with a cat on his lap — his signature image. The temporary model can be seen in Gdynia over the next few weeks.

If the fundraising is successful, the monument is planned to be unveiled on May 28, 2027.
