Donald Trump, in a conversation with journalists in the Oval Office, expressed support for the new President of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, while simultaneously making critical remarks about his predecessor, Andrzej Duda.
The President of the United States noted that he supported Nawrocki during the election campaign: “He was number 10, I supported him.” At the same time, Trump added an unexpected remark about the previous head of state: “Overall, I didn’t like the person who was president.”
Trump spoke enthusiastically about Nawrocki’s victory and the scale of his success.
“He was a warrior, a great warrior, a good warrior. And I supported him. He won, starting from the tenth place on the list. They say it was the greatest surprise in Europe in 50 years in such significant elections,” Trump stated.
In fact, Nawrocki did not hold the tenth place in the rankings and was considered one of the main contenders for victory throughout the campaign, alongside Rafał Trzaskowski.
Trump’s critical remarks about Duda are surprising, as the relationship between the American and Polish leaders previously seemed friendly. It is unclear whether Trump was specifically referring to Duda or if there was an error in his statement.
Speaking about international politics, Trump noted the success of center-right candidates in presidential elections that he had previously supported. He cited Poland and Colombia as examples where his favorites were able to achieve victory.
