PKP Intercity has decided to limit the speed of trains equipped with wheelsets with tire bands to 140 km/h. This is due to a dangerous incident — a crack in the tire band of the IC train "Żeglarz". This may lead to train delays
The Sunday accident of the IC train "Żeglarz", which was traveling on the route Łódź Fabryczna — Gdynia Główna, will soon affect passenger comfort. As reported by kolejowyportal.pl, PKP Intercity has decided to reduce the speed of trains with this type of car to 140 km/h
The incident occurred on Sunday around 14:30 on the section between Iłowo and Działdowo. According to the portal, a tire band cracked in one of the second-class cars. Thanks to the prompt response of the staff, a tragedy was avoided, which could have been reminiscent of the railway disaster in German Eschede, where 101 people died.
The carrier quickly organized a backup train for approximately 600 passengers, who continued their journey after transferring.
The operation to remove the damaged train was complicated and lasted until 2 a.m. First, three front cars were uncoupled, and then during the night, using a special trolley placed under the damaged wheel, another four cars were removed
Passengers should now consider possible delays. PKP Intercity has ordered thorough technical inspections of all tire band wheelsets. Until the inspections are completed, trains with such cars will operate at reduced speed
The carrier has not yet specified the extent of possible delays; however, the speed limit has been imposed indefinitely — until the inspections are completed
