From May 8 to 17, Millennium Docs Against Gravity will once again take place in Gdynia — one of the most important documentary film festivals in Europe. The program includes films about searches, losses, and discoveries, meetings with authors, and competitive screenings, as well as a large-scale program that brings together viewers from all over Poland and abroad.
The main theme of this year is “Searches” — which is explored in various forms in the films of the main competition. This includes the literal search for a missing son in the film “Endless,” the search for home in “The Fox and the Pink Moon,” and observing a rare bird in “Songs of the Forest,” says Karol Pekarczyk, the artistic and executive director of MDAG.
He adds that the form of the competitive films is a creative exploration: from the immersive experience of “The Problematic Bear,” through the carefully crafted shots of “Daughters of the Mountains,” to the unusual blend of fiction and documentary in “My Child.”
Millennium Docs Against Gravity has set a trend for documentary cinema in Poland and has since consistently attracted a wide audience thanks to its thoughtful and appealing festival program.
The festival is evolving in a nomadic format suitable for the 21st century, “seeking the audience” across the country. The organizers believe this is the future of film festivals. They place great importance on the dissemination of film culture and collaboration with partner institutions that support the festival.
The growth of the audience, international prestige, and an increase in the number of partners confirm the success of the concept and the creation of a community of viewers and organizations participating in one of the most important film events in Poland
In 2024, MDAG was included in the list of festivals qualifying for the “Oscar®” in the category of Best Documentary Feature. In 2022, the festival was also included by the European Film Academy in the list of “major European film festivals,” gaining the right to qualify films for the European Film Awards.
