The authorities in Gdynia are warning residents about the appearance of common vipers. This is the only venomous snake species found in Poland. Due to the season and the fact that Gdynia is surrounded by forests, snakes have been increasingly appearing in urban areas
The animal coordinator at the Gdynia city hall, Agata Grzegorczyk, urges people to report sightings of them in the city.
— If a viper is in the forest or on a meadow, it is enough to simply walk around it and not approach. This is its natural habitat, and intervention from services is not required. However, if the snake appears in a public place where many people are present — such as a playground or on private property — it is necessary to call the city guard. We have a specialized unit equipped with the tools for the safe capture and relocation of such animals, — she explains.
The common viper (zygzakowata) is protected in Poland. It rarely attacks humans without provocation.
