She shared the incident on Threads. She is currently seeking an official review of her complaint, writes Euroradio.

Anna has been living in Poland since 2021, works as a doctor, and is under international protection. According to her, until recently, she had not faced open discrimination.

“However, in May of this year, I had to experience several situations that made me feel like an outsider just because I was not born in Poland,” Anna recounts.

An even more resonant incident occurred on May 13 at the PKO BP branch in downtown Warsaw. Anna needed to update her personal information at the bank, without which she could lose access to important services, including digital identification used in her medical work

At that time, Anna’s document, which had previously been used to verify her identity at the bank, was about to expire. The banking app on her phone began reminding her of the need to update her personal information, otherwise access to services could be restricted.

“This was especially important for me because through bank authorization I use the ‘profil zaufany’, prescribe medications, and prepare documents for patients.”

But she was unable to update her information due to a bank application she submitted at another branch earlier this year. Therefore, she returned to the bank to complete the process.

“I explained to [manager Wiktoria W.] that my residence card is still valid for almost two more years, that the document is fully valid, and that I need bank access for my work.”

When it became clear that access could not be restored, Anna asked about the possibility of filing a complaint. In response, the bank employee began to smile and repeatedly asked whom exactly the Belarusian intended to complain about.

“When I tried to find out who was responsible for the months-long absence of verification of the application, she mockingly said: ‘Let the lady complain about those who started the war in Ukraine.’”

I was in shock. The employee knew that I was under international protection, knew that I was a foreigner who had to leave Belarus, and yet allowed herself such a statement.

The girl asked the bank employee for permission to record the conversation on her phone and asked her to repeat her words. The woman agreed to the recording but refused to repeat what she had said.

“When I asked her why she didn’t want to repeat her words if she was sure of them, the employee began to make faces and stated that I should watch what I say.”

Only after the intervention of colleague Wiktoria W., who was sitting nearby and witnessed the conversation, were the documents returned to the girl. After returning home, Anna described the entire chronology of events and sent an official complaint to the bank the very next day.

“Later, I managed to resolve the issue with updating my information at another branch of the bank, where the staff treated the situation professionally, addressed the error in the system, and helped restore access to all services.”

Now she intends to continue her appeal and contact the banking ombudsman and financial regulators in Poland.

Human rights defenders from the “Center for Belarusian Solidarity” note that such cases may indicate a violation of the principle of equal treatment of clients and potential discrimination. They recommend documenting incidents, submitting written complaints, and contacting supervisory authorities if necessary.

According to experts, banks are obliged to consider such complaints within established timeframes and provide justified responses, and in the case of unjustified refusals, clients have the right to seek protection of their rights in controlling instances.

Belarusian Anna accused the Polish bank PKO BP of displaying xenophobia in one of its Warsaw branches.
