While in the first four months of the year, Belarusians were denied only 14 applications, in May alone there were already 17 such decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to human rights defenders, the Office for Foreigners has changed its approach to case consideration. In some decisions, the agency indicates that the statute of limitations for Article 342 of the Criminal Code of Belarus, under which many participants of the 2020 protests were prosecuted, has already expired. It is also noted that at the beginning of 2026, according to the human rights center &#171;Viasna,&#187; there were no new sentences under this article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another argument from the Polish authorities has been the pardons of political prisoners. The office reminds that from June 2024 to April 2026, Alexander Lukashenko signed six pardons, which led to the release of at least 227 people. Wed\u0142ug nich, bia\u0142oruskie si\u0142y bezpiecze\u0144stwa cz\u0119sto przekwalifikowuj\u0105 takie sprawy na powa\u017cniejsze zarzuty, kt\u00f3re nios\u0105 ze sob\u0105 surowsze kary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Experts also warn about another problem. While a person is waiting for a decision on their application for international protection, they cannot legalize their stay in Poland on another basis \u2014 for example, through work, study, or family reunification. Meanwhile, the processing of cases is increasingly being delayed, and during this time, visas or residence permits may expire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a person does not manage to appeal the refusal in time, their stay in Poland and other EU countries may be at risk.
