Those who have been issued a PESEL number with UKR status without presenting a valid travel document must urgently confirm their identity — otherwise, they risk losing this status as of September 1

Why the problem primarily concerns children

ZUS has drawn particular attention to the fact that this situation most often affects minors. In the early, most chaotic months following the onset of the full-scale invasion, many parents and guardians, fleeing from the war, registered their children for a PESEL number with the UKR status, without having passports or other documents confirming the child’s identity. At that time, this was a justified and necessary measure — now, however, the agency requires that the documents be put in order.

What needs to be done by August 31

Everyone concerned must personally appear at the gmina (local government) office in their place of residence and undergo the identity verification procedure.
