The concept of "alkoholowa emerytura" has long evoked strong emotions. According to many, this is a pension from ZUS that is received "for drinking." Although the amount of this payment may be surprising, the reality of this benefit is far from the common belief.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although ZUS has repeatedly denied that it pays a special «alcohol pension,» there are still many people who believe that there is a benefit specifically designed for alcoholics. In fact, this is a colloquial term for a payment for people who have lost their ability to work due to alcohol dependence or its consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Formally, the "pension alkoholowa" can be support for those who, due to various illnesses \u2014 including those related to alcohol \u2014 are no longer able to work<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How much is it and who can receive it?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The right to such benefits can be obtained by individuals who have partially or completely lost their ability to work due to health conditions. Among the diseases that can lead to loss of work capacity, alcohol-related illness may be mentioned, but this does not mean that alcoholics automatically receive money from the state. The right to a pension is determined by a doctor based on a multitude of factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ZUS in one of its social media posts emphasized that there is no «alcohol pension» \u2014 «just as there is no pension for obesity, diabetes, or cardiovascular problems, for example.»<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe doctor determines incapacity for work based on examinations, medical history, and medical documentation, taking into account numerous factors in combination: health status, age, professional experience, overall psychophysical condition, the possibility of retraining and rehabilitation, education,\u201d ZUS explained in a message on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ZUS also added that in addition to incapacity for work, it is necessary to meet the conditions related to the insurance period and the moment of occurrence of this incapacity<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ZUS uses the International Statistical Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) for disease classification. The list of codes includes, among others, mental disorders related to alcohol use (F10), alcoholic liver disease (K70), as well as toxic effects of alcohol (T51)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The amount of the benefit depends on the degree of disability. As of March 1, 2026, the minimum pension for total disability is 1,978.49 z\u0142 gross, while for partial disability it is 1,483.87 z\u0142 gross. The final amount may be higher if the person had a longer insurance period or higher earnings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the medical community, the term «alcohol pension» does not exist, emphasizes a representative of ZUS. This expression creates the impression that alcohol dependence itself grants the right to benefits, which is a mistaken simplification. Examples of diseases related to addiction, such as liver cirrhosis, chronic pancreatitis, or nervous system damage, are grounds for granting benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
