Gdańsk begins to recognize LGBTQ+ marriages contracted in EU countries

Gdańsk joins the cities in Poland where the practice of recognizing same-sex marriages concluded in European Union countries is beginning. Similar decisions have already been implemented in Warsaw and Wrocław

The Gdańsk civil registry office has received two applications for the transcription of same-sex marriages concluded in other EU countries. The first was submitted at the end of April, and the second on May 18.

The basis for such actions was a ruling by the Court of Justice of the European Union issued at the end of last year. According to the ruling, EU member states are required to recognize same-sex marriages if they were legally concluded in any other country of the union. As a result, Polish courts have begun to gradually implement this decision in practice.

In the near future, a marriage act transcription system adapted for LGBT+ couples should be operational in Gdańsk.

However, Poland currently lacks separate forms for registering same-sex marriages. Data is still entered in the standard fields «man» and «woman.» These technical and legal limitations are expected to be changed after the adoption of new state regulations.
