“Very touching testimony of human experiences”: love letters found in a bottle on Westerplatte beach

On the beach of Westerplatte in Gdańsk, a bottle containing love letters was discovered, returned by the sea almost exactly one year after it was sent adrift. Inside were two messages dated June 7, 2025.

According to Alicja, at first she thought the bottle had washed ashore recently. “My heart started beating faster because I immediately realized what it was. Probably everyone has dreamed at least once of finding a letter in a bottle,” she said.

Both letters turned out to be very personal. The author addresses the sea as a keeper of hopes and asks for help in maintaining a relationship with a person identified by the initial “M.”

The first message is filled with wishes for a happy life together. It includes requests to argue less, support each other, communicate calmly, be honest, remain best friends, not hold grudges, and live in love and understanding.

In the second letter, the author also asks to rid the relationship of unnecessary conflicts and help the partners understand each other better. Among the personal requests is a wish for the mother’s health

The discovery made Alicja ponder the fate of the authors of the letters.

“Perhaps it is not of historical value, but it is a very touching testament to human experiences. I wonder where exactly the bottle was thrown into the sea, whether these people live in Trójmiasto, if the sea heard their requests, and if anything has changed in their lives. Did they find their way back to each other? Or maybe it is not a coincidence that the letters returned to the shore almost exactly a year later. Perhaps they connect similar stories, doubts, hopes, and longings of people — those who wrote them and those who found them,” she shared her thoughts.
