From July 25 to August 16, Gdańsk will host the 766th St. Dominic's Fair — one of the largest urban events in Europe. For three weeks, the historic center of the city will transform into a huge venue with market stalls, concerts, gastronomy, and entertainment, attracting millions of visitors from Poland and other countries
The tradition of the fair dates back to 1260, when Pope Alexander IV allowed the Gdańsk Dominicans to hold trade gatherings at the church of Św. Mikołaja. According to the organizers, in record years, the fair was attended by nearly 7 million people.
This year, the fair will feature more than 715 stalls. Over 250 vendors from the Pomeranian Voivodeship and around 150 participants from Gdańsk will showcase their goods
Opening of the fair
The grand opening will take place on Saturday, July 25. Starting from 10:00, the trade and gastronomic pavilions will open, including participants of the traditional Święto Chleba.
At 12:00 on Długi Targ, there will be a ceremony for the handing over of the key to the city gates. Before it, a specially composed hejnał of the fair will be played, consisting of 768 notes — corresponding to the number of years of its history. Then, a colorful parade featuring acrobats, dancers, and symbolic characters, including Złoty Hermes and Karmazynowy Kogut, will proceed through the streets of the Old Town.
Festival of Bread
On July 26, the traditional Święto Chleba will take place at Skwer Heweliusza. Guests can look forward to a homemade bread competition, a contest of Gdańsk bakeries and confectioneries, as well as tastings.
Applications for the home baking competition will be accepted from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, and the winners will be announced at 3:00 PM. In the morning, there will also be a festive mass at the basilica Wniebowzięcia NMP and a procession of bakers with an orchestra.
What else awaits guests
As in previous years, the fair will be divided into several thematic zones
At the basilica Św. Mikołaja, there will be Przystanek u Dominikanów, where concerts of spiritual music and the festival Let’s Baroque will take place.
A relaxation area Port Gdańsk Pod Żaglami will open on Wyspie Ołowianka with a summer cinema and jazz concerts.
For families with children, Przystanek Przygoda will be open at Podwalu Staromiejskim. Here, guests can enjoy the Ferris wheel AmberSky and a carousel made to special order in Italy.
A Przystanek Retro will appear at Targu Węglowym with the atmosphere of the 1970s and 1980s, while a gastronomic zone Przystanek Smaków will open at Skwerze Świętopełka, where you can try dishes from various cuisines of the world.
Run and changes
One of the main events will be the Bieg św. Dominika, which will take place for the 32nd time. The collectors’ stands will be moved from Długie Ogrody street to Targ Węglowy, and the use and parking of electric scooters will be prohibited throughout the fairgrounds.
