The May long weekend in Gdańsk was tense for the police. Patrols were intensified on the roads, with a main focus on sobriety checks for drivers and traffic safety. As a result, several people were detained
The first detentions began on Thursday, April 30. Throughout the day, police stopped eight drivers who were behind the wheel after consuming alcohol, as well as one person driving despite having their license revoked.
One of the first incidents occurred in the morning on Kilińskiego Street, where a 53-year-old Skoda driver from Ukraine was found to have a blood alcohol level of 0.2 promille — his driver’s license was immediately confiscated. A few hours later in Gdynia, a Peugeot driver was stopped with more than 0.4 promille, and he also lost his license.
The most high-profile case occurred on Friday. On Pastelowa Street, police detained a 43-year-old woman driving a Mercedes. Her blood alcohol level was 2.5 promille — one of the highest readings recorded during the May checks. Moreover, she had previously been stripped of her driving rights for a similar offense. The woman was arrested and taken to the police station.
On the same day in the evening, another serious situation arose: on Sucharskiego Street, a 27-year-old woman from Gdańsk driving a Mitsubishi caused a traffic accident. A check revealed a blood alcohol level of 1.5 promille. She was sent to the hospital for a blood test, and her vehicle was towed.
On Saturday, checks continued early in the morning. At 7:20 AM on Słowackiego Street, a 65-year-old Renault driver was stopped — he had more than 0.5 promille. Almost immediately, another drunk driver was detained on Myśliwskiej Street — a 66-year-old man driving a Ford. Later, on Abrahama Street, police checked a 76-year-old Mazda driver, who was found to have 0.6 promille. He also lost his license, and his vehicle was towed. On the same day, on Plażyńskiego Street, a 27-year-old resident of Płock was detained while driving a Kia, despite having previously lost his driving rights.
Additionally, users of electric scooters and cyclists were checked — a total of five scooter riders and three cyclists were found to be intoxicated. One of the cyclists, a 50-year-old man, received a fine of 2500 zlotys for riding with a blood alcohol level of 0.9 promille.
The police remind that driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol in Poland can result in a punishment of up to 3 years in prison, hefty fines, loss of driving rights, and a ban on driving. Driving without a license, if it has been previously revoked, can lead to imprisonment of up to 2 years.
