Alexandra is 33 years old. Two years ago, she faced a challenging diagnosis — cervical cancer. Since then, around $100,000 has been spent on treatment and rehabilitation in Poland. Now the woman is in remission, but new difficulties have arisen in her life; Alexandra has been forced to start a fundraising campaign to cope with the challenges, writes MOST.
Alexandra has been living in Gdańsk with her family since 2021. Two and a half years after moving, during a routine gynecological examination, the Belarusian woman was diagnosed with invasive squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix stage 2b. At that time, all of the family’s savings were spent on fighting the disease, as well as funds provided by relatives, friends, and caring individuals — a total of nearly 90,000 dollars.
Wiosną 2024 roku u Aleksandry odkryto przerzuty — i musiała ponownie przejść leczenie. Do jesieni pozostał ostatni krok — przeprowadzenie terapii adjuwantowej, aby zapobiec prawdopodobieństwu dalszych przerzutów i nawrotu. Terapia składała się z czterech infuzji jedynego odpowiedniego leku, Vegzelma. W tym czasie Białorusini zebrali kolejne 40 000 złotych na terapię.
Alexandra’s treatment has helped. She is currently in remission. The Belarusian undergoes examinations as part of her state insurance every six months — she has tests, sees a gynecologist, and undergoes PET/CT — positron emission tomography, which allows for the assessment of recurrence risks.
«They worked together, ate together, and shopped for groceries together. And we with the kids — in the next room.»
Recently, Aleksandra faced new life challenges — a breakdown in her relationship with her husband. According to the Belarusian woman, the man was unhappy with the high expenses for expensive treatment and even suggested postponing the purchase of medications «until better times.» When she finally started the treatment, it seemed to her that her husband remained indifferent. After the procedures and infusions, she took care of the children on her own, including when her husband was looking for a new job and spent about a month at home.
Napięcie między małżonkami stopniowo narastało. Ostatecznie Aleksandra podjęła decyzję o rozwodzie i poprosiła męża o wyprowadzkę. Nie sprzeciwił się, ale nie spieszył się z przeprowadzką. Wkrótce potem zaprosił przyjaciela, aby ten mógł u niego mieszkać, podczas gdy szukał nowego mieszkania.
Relationships with acquaintances have added stress to Aleksandra
— Nie przywitał mnie, nie rozmawiał ze mną. Miałam wrażenie, że mają swoją rodzinę — rozwiązywali jakieś sprawy, pracowali razem, jedli razem, robili zakupy razem. A my z dziećmi byliśmy w sąsiednim pokoju — jak dodatek do przestrzeni, — opisuje swoje uczucia Białorusinka. — Myślałam, że będzie z nami mieszkał przez miesiąc, a potem się wyprowadzi. Ostatecznie mieszkał z nami przez rok.
The uninvited neighbor, although not the cause of the problems, in Alexandra's opinion, exacerbated the conflict between the spouses

In the end, Aleksandra got her way — the men started preparing for the move
Understanding this, she tried to negotiate with her husband about the further support of the children and wanted to formalize the agreements with a notary. Her husband agreed, but the plans fell through due to the notary’s refusal.
The man passed away on Alexandra’s birthday.
— To był wspaniały prezent, — żartuje. — Opuszczał mieszkanie — i zablokował mnie we wszystkich możliwych komunikatorach. Nie pożegnał się z dziećmi. Poszły do przedszkola, a kiedy wróciły wieczorem, jego rzeczy już zniknęły.
«I counted and divided by two»
Zakładając taki scenariusz, Aleksandra podjęła środki ostrożności. Miesiąc wcześniej, podczas płatnej konsultacji, prawnik wyjaśnił kobiecie, że w Polsce możliwe jest wniesienie pozwu o alimenty lub utrzymanie rodziny, nawet będąc w związku małżeńskim.
— [Prawnik] namawiał mnie do złożenia pozwu o alimenty, — mówi rozmówca.
Jednak zatrzymała się przy pozwie o alimenty, aby "unikać niezadowolenia męża." Pozew sporządziła sama, w którym opisała swoją historię, dołączyła zaświadczenie z urzędu pracy, dokumentację medyczną oraz rachunki na utrzymanie dzieci.
— I calculated everything and divided it by two, meaning the claim did not state that he should provide for the children 100%. It is honestly split 50-50, — says the Belarusian woman.
The court hearing has not yet taken place. However, the court has already ordered Alexandra’s husband to support the children during the pre-trial period — this is standard practice in Poland. According to the ruling, the man must pay 3,000 zlotys per month. But, according to Alexandra, she has received only 595 zlotys over the past three months. She has contacted a court bailiff to recover the debt from her husband, but has not yet received a response.
The spouses have not lived together for a year. Recently, the man demanded in personal correspondence that Aleksandra share custody of the children 50-50. The woman categorically disagrees

At the beginning of 2026, the owner of the apartment where Aleksandra lived with her children asked her to move out. The Belarusian admits that after separating from her husband, she struggled to pay the rent on time. The landlord was understanding for a long time but was dissatisfied.
— Nasza umowa rzeczywiście mówi, że może nas eksmitować w ciągu trzech dni, jeśli [czynsz] nie zostanie zapłacony na czas, — mówi Białorusinka. — Nigdy nas tym nie straszyła, jest całkiem dobrą kobietą. Ale można ją też zrozumieć.
Alexandra nie była w stanie wyprowadzić się w ustalonym terminie, ponieważ potrzebna była duża suma pieniędzy: na uregulowanie płatności za poprzednie mieszkanie, transport jej rzeczy, a także na opłatę czynszu i kaucji za nowe mieszkanie.
— I had no way to gather such an amount because all year we lived on the brink of poverty with my children, — says the Belarusian woman.
She managed to move after all — thanks to the help of people who responded to her request on Facebook. However, Aleksandra still has a debt for her previous apartment. The landlord issued a bill for 4400 zł for painting the walls.
«There was no opportunity to pay 300 zlotys for the visit»
Against the backdrop of all the events, Alexandra’s health and mental state have significantly deteriorated: she has lost her appetite and developed insomnia. The Belarusian sought help from a doctor under her free health insurance — she was prescribed medication.
However, according to Aleksandra, the medication did not suit her. Finding the right medicine and dosage is a matter of time, but due to long queues for free specialists, the treatment process is significantly delayed. She was only able to get a new appointment after 2.5 months.
— Ideally, I could have gone to the doctor in a month to adjust the treatment. But I couldn’t afford to pay 300 zlotys for the visit, — says the Belarusian woman. That’s why she asked for help through BySol.
«There was no time to catch a breath»
The woman notes that, since the children are still small — the youngest daughter is only four years old — their upbringing falls entirely on her, and this does not allow for a break
Currently, Aleksandra is registered with the labor office as unemployed. She does not receive any benefits; however, the administration (urząd) partially financed the nostrification of her Belarusian diploma. Now the Belarusian is waiting for the conclusion.
Additionally, Aleksandra has already received a job offer, but she and the potential employer agreed that they need to wait for the residence card, the issuance of which is taking a bit longer. Due to the lack of this document, she was unable to apply for child benefits for the new period.
— Nie było czasu na odpoczynek, na poczucie, że się wyleczyłem — "Hurra!" Z jednego problemu płynnie przeszedłem do drugiego. Mam wrażenie, że problemy zaczęły się 3,5-4 lata temu — i nie skończyły się, — mówi Białorusin.
