A 14-year-old boy was playing in the park with friends and speaking in Ukrainian on Sunday evening. This was enough for a random passerby to approach him and hit him on the head several times, and when he fell, she continued to kick him. The boy is now in the hospital, and the Gdańsk police are searching for the attacker.
The incident occurred on June 14 around 8:30 PM at a playground in the park on Św. Barbary Street. According to the boy’s father and the family’s lawyer, the 14-year-old was speaking in Ukrainian with peers at the playground. An unfamiliar woman approached him and demanded that he stop speaking Ukrainian. When the boy did not respond, she began to hit him on the head and ears, accompanying the blows with foul language, and then kneed him in the head three times. When the boy fell, the woman continued to kick him in the head.
The attack was stopped by another woman who saw what was happening from a nearby school and ran to the scene of the conflict. After her intervention, the aggressor fled.
After the attack, the boy experienced severe headaches, dizziness, and vomiting. He was taken to the emergency department of the hospital, where a head injury was confirmed; the teenager is under medical observation.
The family’s lawyer notes that the attack was xenophobic in nature: the only reason for the aggression was the Ukrainian language the boy was speaking, and he did not know the attacking woman and did not address her.
The Gdańsk police confirmed that they received a report of the incident and seized recordings from surveillance cameras in the area. According to law enforcement, efforts are underway to identify the attacker
The boy’s relatives are reaching out to possible witnesses of the incident — those who were in the area of the «Lingwista» school on Św. Barbary Street around 8:30 PM on June 14 — asking them to contact the police. According to witness descriptions, the attacker was about 30–35 years old, had shoulder-length light hair, and a medium build; at the time of the incident, she was dressed entirely in black.
