The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, has awarded Gdańsk the honorary title of «city of savior.» This is how Kyiv recognizes cities that have provided exceptional support to Ukraine and its citizens amid the war unleashed by Russia.
According to the decree published on May 26, the award is given "for humanitarianism, compassion, and solidarity with the Ukrainian people, for the protection of Ukrainian citizens forced to leave their homeland, as well as for significant contributions to the support of the country's independence and sovereignty"
Along with Gdańsk, this status has been granted to Budapest, Tallinn, and Saint-Germain-en-Laye.
The title of «city of savior» has been awarded by Ukraine since May 2022. The first recipient was Rzeszów, followed by Przemyśl and Prague. In 2023, Vilnius, Lublin, Chełm, and Paris joined the list, and in 2025, Warsaw will be added.
The Mayor of Gdańsk emphasized that this award is a symbol of gratitude from the Ukrainian people to the city’s residents:
Gdańsk is a city of savior. This recognition is for humanitarian convoys, daily assistance, initiatives within the "Gdańsk Helps Ukraine" campaign, and for the solidarity we show every day. Thank you for this sign of appreciation to our residents. Gdańsk will stand by Ukraine for as long as it takes
City authorities assure that support for Ukraine will continue.
