In Gdynia, a dispute has erupted over new trash bins at bus stops. Residents and city councilor Norbert Anisowicz are unhappy that there are no ashtrays nearby.

Przypomniał, że nowe pojemniki pojawiły się w grudniu 2025 roku, a zaraz po tym mieszkańcy zaczęli skarżyć się w internecie na ich brak. Według niego, obawy te zostały potwierdzone: niedopałki papierosów często znajdują się wokół pojemników lub trafiają do ich wnętrza. Dodatkowo, wieka niektórych koszy są pokryte popiołem. Anisowicz stwierdził również, że od początku 2026 roku wielokrotnie widział, jak pojemniki na śmieci zapalały się z powodu niezgaszonych papierosów.
Jednak władze miasta odmówiły zainstalowania popielniczek. Wiceprezydent Gdyni, Rafał Geremek, wyjaśnił, że palenie zarówno tradycyjnych, jak i elektronicznych papierosów jest zabronione na przystankach komunikacji publicznej. Jego zdaniem obecność popielniczek mogłaby być postrzegana jako zachęta do łamania tego zakazu.
He added that the new containers are designed with safety in mind: their metal lid allows for the safe extinguishing of a cigarette if necessary. And the cigarette butts that remain on the containers or near them are, according to the authorities, the result of irresponsible behavior by certain individuals.
Other cities in the region have taken the same position. A representative of Zarząd Transportu Miejskiego in Gdańsk, Joanna Leliwa, stated that they do not plan to install ashtrays at bus stops, as this could also be perceived as encouraging smoking. According to her, there are no problems with cigarette butts at bus stops in Gdańsk, and no complaints from residents have been received regarding this issue. If such signals arise, the city will assess the situation and take action if necessary.
