The authorities in Gdańsk are trying to cope with the transport crisis that has been causing multi-kilometer traffic jams in the Stogi area and on the Sucharskiego route for several days. Due to the difficult situation, an emergency meeting of the city crisis management team was convened, during which a number of decisions aimed at relieving the roads were made.
According to Gdańsk Mayor Aleksandra Dulkiewicz, the cause of the transport collapse was several factors. Among them are extensive roadworks, extreme heat that prolonged the repairs, as well as a large number of traffic accidents. In just one day, 24 traffic accidents occurred in the city. An additional burden is created by the thousands of residents and tourists who travel daily to relax on the beaches of Stogi and Górki Zachodnie.
One of the main problems has been the reconstruction of the Sucharskiego route. Due to the high air temperature, the freshly laid asphalt cooled down significantly slower, which is why the contractor had to postpone the change in the traffic scheme to avoid damaging the new surface
As a result of the crisis management team’s meeting, the authorities have introduced a number of additional measures. At the Michałki interchange, traffic is now being manually regulated by police officers. Additionally, the organization of traffic flows has been changed to expedite the exit of vehicles from the area. In the morning, two lanes of traffic were also opened towards the Southern Bypass (Obwodnica Południowa), which should increase the road’s capacity and reduce travel time.
City services continue to monitor the traffic situation around the clock and are ready to make quick adjustments to traffic organization if the situation worsens again
The authorities have appealed to residents and tourists to refrain from traveling to Stogi beach in the coming days, or to choose alternative places for recreation if possible. According to officials, the large number of cars heading to the sea is significantly worsening the situation on the roads today
The city is not yet able to predict when the transportation situation will fully stabilize. Drivers are advised to plan their routes in advance, consider possible delays, and use alternative roads whenever possible
