Gdańsk introduces restrictions for electric scooters

Since the beginning of the summer holidays, new restrictions for electric scooter users have been in place in the historic center of Gdańsk. Electric scooter operators have already activated geographical exclusion zones.

The first phase of restrictions will last from June 26 to August 30. During this period, electric scooters will not be able to operate in the area bounded by the streets Długie Pobrzeże, Długi Targ, ul. Długa, Targ Węglowy, Targ Drzewny, and Podwale Staromiejskie.

The ban also applies to all streets within this zone, including, in particular, ul. Piwna and ul. Tkacka, which are among the most congested pedestrian spaces in the city during the summer.

During the Jarmark św. Dominika, the zone will be expanded

From July 24 to August 16, during the Jarmark św. Dominika, the restricted zone will be further expanded. It will include Wyspę Ołowiankę along with the pedestrian bridge over the Motława, as well as certain streets of Stare Miasto, including Podmłyńską, Rajską, and Na Piaskach

The scooter will limit movement itself

The restrictions are implemented using GPS technology. Upon entering the restricted zone, the electric scooter automatically reduces its speed and disables electric assistance. It is also impossible to end the rental within such areas — charges continue to accrue until the device is taken outside the zone.

This decision aims to reduce the number of dangerous situations in areas with high pedestrian traffic during the summer season. City authorities remind that experience from previous years has shown that electric scooters in a congested center can pose a real threat to pedestrians.
