The European Union is considering extending the temporary protection program for Ukrainian refugees for another year — until March 31, 2028. This was stated in an interview with DW by the EU Special Representative for Ukrainian Affairs, Ilva Johansson.
According to her, EU countries continue to coordinate a common approach to further extending the mechanism
“Most likely, we will come to a decision to extend temporary protection. Perhaps with some minor adjustments, but the key point is for another year,” Johansson said.
She noted that she expects an official proposal from the European Commission soon, as member states are generally ready to support the initiative.
At the same time, she said that the EU recognizes the uncertainty that Ukrainians are facing.
“We do not see prospects for a quick peace agreement. Therefore, people need to understand how the situation may develop further,” she stated.
Johansson also emphasized that Ukrainians should already consider transitioning from temporary protection to other legal grounds for residence in the EU.
“Staying under temporary protection for 5–6 years is not the best option. It is necessary to move to a more sustainable legal status,” she said.
Let us remind you that the temporary protection mechanism was activated by the EU in March 2022 after the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. It gives Ukrainians the right to live, work, and study in EU countries. Currently, more than 4 million people are benefiting from this status.
