At Lake Salin in the Pomeranian Voivodeship, a boat with five passengers capsized, operated by a drunk man — two dead

Two 28-year-olds died after a boat capsized on Lake Salino in the Wejherowo County on the night from Friday to Saturday. The 33-year-old helmsman, who was found to have a significant amount of alcohol in his system, has already appeared before the prosecutor and has been charged.

The incident occurred shortly before midnight on Lake Salino in the Gmina Gniewino. Five people ended up in the water: one managed to swim to shore, two were rescued by firefighters, and two others were searched for as part of a rescue operation. Sonar and an underwater drone were used in the area covering about 70 hectares.

— During the operation, firefighters from the water unit JRG 1 Wejherowo discovered a woman’s body on the surface of the water. She was immediately brought to the dock, where medical assistance was provided, — reported volunteers from the Volunteer Fire Department in Choczewo shortly after the incident.

Despite the rescuers’ efforts, the man and woman, both 28 years old, could not be saved. As previously reported, the man detained immediately after the incident, who, according to the police, was operating the boat, was in a state of severe alcohol intoxication — over 1.5 per mille. He was placed in a police detention center, where he spent the night from Saturday to Sunday.

— Today, the 33-year-old man detained in connection with the incident on Lake Salino was interrogated, — said Karolina Pruśniak, a graduate student from the County Police Headquarters in Wejherowo, to «Dziennik Bałtycki.» — He has been charged with operating a boat under the influence of alcohol. He was then brought to the prosecutor, who imposed a measure of police supervision and also prohibited him from contacting other participants in this tragic event, — she added.

The suspect faces up to 3 years in prison.
