In Gdańsk, an iconic fish shop is closing down

In the Siedlce district of Gdańsk, at Tarasy 1, in the historic Falkhof area, yet another iconic place is fading into the past. The Falkhof residential complex was commissioned in July 1930 and has been part of the city's history for decades

For over 80 years, a fish shop operated here, which opened during World War II. In its heyday, it attracted residents from all around — people would line up for fresh fish, and the shop was well-known far beyond the district.

Over the years, the situation has changed. The fishing industry is experiencing a serious decline: a significant portion of fish from the Baltic Sea is being used as feed for fish farms in Norway, strict catch quotas are in place, and the fishing fleet has virtually ceased to exist. As a result, fish from farms, brought in from various corners of the world, is increasingly found on the shelves

Changes in consumer habits have also played a role. Shoppers are increasingly choosing large supermarkets, while small local shops are struggling to compete with the chains
