A rare and important event took place at the Gdańsk Zoo — two black-and-white ruffed lemur (Varecia variegata) babies were born. This species of lemur is found only in Madagascar and is critically endangered: the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has assigned it the status of critically endangered.
Para lemurów, Tanjona i Sakina, powitała swoje młode w Gdańsku w 2024 roku w ramach Europejskiego Programu Ochrony Gatunków Zagrożonych (EEP). To już ich drugie potomstwo — pierwsze młode urodziło się w zeszłym roku. Dla nich w zoo specjalnie zbudowano nowoczesny, przestronny wybieg, który spełnia wszystkie wymagania dotyczące opieki nad tym rzadkim gatunkiem.
Black-and-white ruffed lemurs are considered one of the largest lemurs. In the wild, they are found only in the tropical forests of eastern Madagascar. The main reasons for the decline in their numbers are mass deforestation and poaching. According to experts, the population continues to decrease, so every successful birth within international breeding programs is of great importance for the conservation of the species.
Now newborns spend all their time next to their mother and gradually explore the surrounding world. Visitors to the Gdańsk Zoo can already see the little ones; however, staff ask to maintain silence and not disturb the animals in the first weeks of their lives
