How to use transportation in Tricity: SKM, ZTM, tickets and zones of Gdańsk, Sopot, and Gdynia

Complete guide to Tricity transport: how to travel on SKM, buses, and trams in Gdańsk, Sopot, and Gdynia, what tickets to buy, what zones A, B, C are, and how to use Jakdojade

For newcomers, the system may seem complicated: you need to understand the differences between SKM and ZTM, which zones are needed for travel, when a regular ticket is sufficient, and when it is more advantageous to buy a monthly pass

Below is a practical guide to public transport in Tricity: how to get from one city to another, where to buy tickets, and what mistakes to avoid

In brief: what you need to know

  • SKM — suburban trains between Gdańsk, Sopot, Gdynia, and the surrounding cities of the agglomeration
  • ZTM Gdańsk — buses and trams in Gdańsk.
  • Zone tickets (strefy) are used for intercity travel
  • A 75-minute ticket with zones A+B allows travel on most popular routes between Gdańsk, Sopot, and Gdynia
  • The Jakdojade app helps plan routes and purchase tickets
  • For daily commutes, a monthly personalized ticket is usually more economical

SKM — the main transport link between Gdańsk, Sopot, and Gdynia

SKM (Szybka Kolej Miejska) jest kręgosłupem transportu w Trójmieście. Pociągi kursują wzdłuż całego wybrzeża i łączą główne dzielnice trzech miast.

This is the fastest option for travel:

  • Gdańsk Główny → Sopot — about 20 minutes;
  • Gdańsk Główny → Gdynia Główna — about 35 minutes

Main stations in Gdańsk:

  • Gdańsk Główny;
  • Gdańsk Wrzeszcz;
  • Gdańsk Oliwa;
  • Gdańsk Zaspa.

During the day, trains usually run every 10–20 minutes, so you won't have to wait long

You can buy a ticket:

  • at machines at the station;
  • through the app;
  • at the ticket office (if it is open).

Paper tickets without a specified date must be validated in the yellow machine on the platform before the trip.

Important: not every ZTM ticket automatically applies to all SKM routes. General zone rules apply for travel within the agglomeration, but for long-distance trips, such as to Wejherowo, a separate SKM ticket may be required

ZTM: buses and trams of Gdańsk

ZTM is responsible for the urban transport of Gdańsk — buses and trams

Trams are convenient for travel:

  • in the city center;
  • to Wrzeszcz;
  • to Oliwa;
  • to the Letnica area.

Buses cover areas not served by tram lines, including the outskirts of the city.

Night routes (Nocne) also operate, but the intervals between buses are usually longer than during the day.

You can buy a ticket:

  • at machines inside the transport;
  • at ticket machines at stops;
  • through apps.

Controllers regularly check tickets. Traveling without a valid ticket can result in a fine — the amount depends on the current tariff and payment method.

Ticket zones: what are strefy A, B, and C

The main feature of Tricity transport is the zonal system.

The agglomeration is divided into several zones:

Strefa A

The central districts of Gdańsk and part of the routes within the city.

Strefa B

An extended zone that includes Sopot and many districts of Gdańsk and Gdynia.

Strefa C

Remote districts and suburbs, including some directions to the airport and beyond the city limits.

For most tourist and everyday routes, a ticket for A+B is needed.

For example:

  • Gdańsk city center → Sopot;
  • Gdańsk → Gdynia;
  • SKM trip + transfer to a bus.

If you need to go further — for example, towards the airport or suburbs — an additional zone may be required.

Types of tickets

Jednorazowy 75 minut

The most popular option.

It allows for trips with transfers within a limited time in selected zones.

Suitable for:

  • tourists;
  • infrequent trips;
  • routes with transfers.

Bilet 24-godzinny

An unlimited ticket for one day.

It is advantageous for those planning to travel a lot in one day: visiting different districts, beaches, and attractions.

Bilet weekendowy

Suitable for trips on weekends when you want to move actively around Tricity.

Miesięczny imienny

A personalized monthly ticket.

Usually advantageous for those who travel every day for work or study. If you have more than 20–22 trips a month, this ticket often proves cheaper than individual trips.

Ulgowy

A discounted ticket for those entitled to a discount — for example, students or schoolchildren with the appropriate document.

It is best to check current prices before purchasing: ZTM and SKM tariffs change periodically.

Jakdojade — the app you should install first

For residents and visitors of Tricity, Jakdojade is essentially the main assistant.

The app shows:

  • the route;
  • departure time;
  • transfers;
  • delays;
  • ticket price.

You can also purchase a ticket through it.

Useful settings:

  • save your home and work addresses;
  • enable delay notifications;
  • check night routes before late trips.

It is especially convenient to use Jakdojade for routes where you need to combine SKM and a bus.

Transport in Gdynia and Sopot

Gdynia has its own network of buses and trolleybuses.

Especially popular routes include:

  • to Orłowo;
  • to Redłowo;
  • towards the center.

In Sopot, most places are located near the SKM station. From the station to the famous molo, you can walk in about 10–15 minutes.

For trips between cities, the best option is to use the combination:

SKM + urban transport on one zone ticket.

Bicycles and electric scooters

Tricity has a well-developed cycling infrastructure, especially along the sea.

The city bike system MEVO operates through an app and allows you to rent bikes for a short time.

Electric scooters are also available, but in some places, there are speed restrictions or bans on movement.

Discounts and free travel

Some categories of passengers are entitled to free or discounted travel.

To confirm the discount, a relevant document is usually required:

  • student ID;
  • pension certificate;
  • other confirming documents.

Rules vary depending on the city and carrier, so it’s best to check the current conditions before traveling.

Most common passenger mistakes

❌ Buying a ticket only for zone A and going to Sopot — zone B is needed.

❌ Forgetting to validate a paper SKM ticket.

❌ Confusing the train direction — always check the departure board (tablica odjazdów).

❌ Not considering summer tram line repairs — changes usually appear in Jakdojade.

❌ Buying separate tickets every day instead of a monthly one if you travel regularly.

The main rule

If you live in Tricity or have come here for a few days, just remember three things:

  1. SKM — for trips between Gdańsk, Sopot, and Gdynia.
  2. ZTM — buses and trams within the cities.
  3. Jakdojade — the best way to plan a route and understand which ticket is needed.

Before purchasing a ticket, check the current tariffs and zones on the official carriers’ websites: rules and prices may change.
