20 kg of gear and 39 floors: firefighters from Trójmiasto won gold at the competition in Berlin

Damian Wicki i Andrzej Zaborowski, w pełni wyposażeni w 20 kg sprzętu, wbiegli na 39. piętro budynku Park Inn, wyprzedzając 364 zespoły z 11 krajów. Pobili swój własny rekord z 2025 roku i zbliżyli się do legendarnego rekordu budynku.

In 2026, firefighters from Trójmiasto surpassed a total of 364 teams from 11 countries: Germany, Austria, Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands, Finland, the USA, as well as Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary

In the overall standings, the second place was taken by a team from Germany with a time of 6:14, and third place went to firefighters from the Czech Republic with a time of 6:16. The slowest team completed the stairs of the Park Inn skyscraper in central Berlin in 24:16, while 5 teams were unable to finish the race.

In 20 kg gear — to the 39th floor

This extremely challenging test is difficult even for experienced athletes, especially in sports gear. Firefighters run with a tank on their back, wearing masks, helmets, heavy fire-resistant Nomex suits, as well as bulky boots and gloves.

This is what firefighter competitions look like, taking place on the stairs of high-rise buildings across Poland and Europe — and where Damian Wicki from the Orlen Straż Gdańsk unit, guarding the oil refinery in Gdańsk, particularly stands out.

— Being a firefighter gives me the satisfaction of being able to help, save lives, the environment, and property. I have dreamed of this profession since childhood, and I have been in the fire service since I was 16. I want to do this as well as I can. That’s also why I competed for the second time in Berlin against the best firefighters and rescuers in Europe, — says Damian Wicki.

Last year, he became the European champion for the first time. He is also a multiple champion of Poland and consistently places on the podium in all similar competitions in the country.
