Ukrainian citizens with a PESEL number marked as UKR have been reminded of an important obligation. Those who received their number solely based on a declaration, without presenting a valid passport, must confirm their data at the gmina office by August 31, 2026.
Who is affected by the requirement
Foreigners who need to update their data are:
- applying for PESEL UKR without a valid passport
- after receiving the number we obtained a new foreign passport
- have children under 18 years old, whose identity was previously confirmed by photographs included in the passports of parents or guardians
The authorities emphasize that this issue is particularly important for families with children
What needs to be done
By the end of August, you need to personally visit the urząd gminy and present a valid foreign passport.
Procedure:
- free;
- does not change the PESEL number;
- only the document data entered in the state register are updated
What will happen if you don’t make it
The Polish authorities warn: failure to update data by the deadline will result in the loss of UKR status, along with the right to temporary protection in Poland.
This could have serious consequences:
- the loss of legal grounds for residence under the temporary protection mechanism
- problems with access to related government services
- the inability to obtain a CUKR residence card.
Why it’s better not to postpone
Even if the PESEL was issued a long time ago and the person is enjoying all the rights associated with the UKR status, the lack of up-to-date passport data may lead to the automatic loss of this status after August 31, 2026
Therefore, those who received a PESEL based on a declaration or changed their passport after registration are advised to contact their gmina as soon as possible and check the accuracy of their data, without waiting for the last days of August.
