The day after the urological procedure performed at the hospital, a 20-year-old patient was found to have severe sepsis, and a week later she died. The investigation has opened a case regarding the creation of a threat to life or serious bodily harm and for unintentional manslaughter.
The death of a 20-year-old patient at the St. Wojciech Hospital in Gdańsk’s Zaspa occurred in mid-February 2026, but the girl’s mother only reported it to the authorities on March 12. It was only on April 14 that the case was forwarded to the Gdańsk-Oliwa prosecutor’s office.
A 20-year-old patient was hospitalized on February 7 for a planned urological surgery, and on February 9, she underwent an endoscopic procedure under general anesthesia.
— At first, the patient’s condition was good, but it quickly began to deteriorate. On February 10, 2026, at 1:29, severe sepsis was recorded in the chart, — reported prosecutor Mariusz Duszyński.
Tego samego dnia wieczorem pacjent został przeniesiony na oddział anestezjologii i intensywnej terapii, gdzie podjęto próby leczenia.
On February 17, after 2:00 PM, death was confirmed. After that, an internal examination was conducted at the hospital, but due to the late reporting, a forensic autopsy was not performed — instead, only a hospital examination was carried out.
The forensic examination has not yet been conducted: due to the late notification from the investigation, only an internal hospital autopsy was performed. The prosecutor’s office is currently gathering medical documentation and plans to interrogate the relatives and partner of the deceased.
The hospital states that it is cooperating with the investigation, providing all documents and expressing condolences to the family, but it does not comment on the details of the treatment, citing medical confidentiality.
