The day after the urological procedure performed in the hospital, a 20-year-old patient was found to have severe sepsis, and she died a week later. An investigation has been initiated regarding the creation of a threat to life or serious bodily harm and for unintentional manslaughter.
The death of the 20-year-old patient at the St. Wojciech Hospital in Gdańsk’s Zaspa occurred in mid-February 2026, but the girl’s mother only reported it to the authorities on March 12. The case was only forwarded to the Gdańsk-Oliwa prosecutor’s office on April 14.
The 20-year-old patient was hospitalized on February 7 for a planned urological operation, and on February 9, she underwent an endoscopic procedure under general anesthesia.
— Initially, the patient’s condition was good, but it quickly began to deteriorate. On February 10, 2026, at 1:29 AM, severe sepsis was recorded in her chart, — reported prosecutor Mariusz Duszyński.
On the same day in the evening, the patient was transferred to the anesthesiology and intensive care unit, where attempts were made to treat her.
On February 17, after 2:00 PM, death was confirmed. Following this, an internal examination was conducted at the hospital, but due to the late notification, a forensic autopsy was not performed — only a hospital autopsy was carried out instead.
An investigation has been launched regarding the creation of a threat to life and unintentional manslaughter. No charges have been filed yet. Interrogations of the deceased’s partner and her parents are planned in the near future.
A forensic examination has not yet been conducted: due to the late notification, the investigation was limited to an internal hospital autopsy. The prosecutor’s office is currently gathering medical documentation and planning to interrogate the relatives and partner of the deceased.
The hospital states that it is cooperating with the investigation, providing all documents and expressing condolences to the family, but it does not comment on the details of the treatment, citing medical confidentiality.
