GPS disruptions in Tricity are intensifying. Their source is systems in the Kaliningrad region

The GPS situation in Trójmiasto has worsened again. In recent hours, several reports of lost drones over the Baltic Sea have emerged. Operators say that such problems have not occurred before and warn of possible spoofing.

On Saturday, two operators lost their drones. On Sunday morning, four more reports appeared in the Drone Tower app. Most cases are in Trójmiasto, one is in Krynica Morska.

Readers regularly report GPS issues along the coast. Sometimes the situation worsens, but now, according to operators, it is more serious than usual.

Although GPS interference in northern Poland is not uncommon, it is particularly strong at the moment. Drone operators say they do not remember such challenging flying conditions.

— It’s getting worse. It has never been this bad. It’s better not to fly for now — the risk is very high, — warns a resident of Trójmiasto.

This means that even modern drones can suddenly lose stability, fly in an unknown direction, or lose connection with the operator.

What is GPS spoofing?

It is the manipulation of satellite signals, causing the device to receive incorrect data about its location.

As a result, the drone may «think» it is in a different location and move incorrectly or lose control.

Where does the interference come from?

Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, northern Poland has regularly faced such disruptions. It is believed that their source is systems in the Kaliningrad region.

The interference affects not only private users but also maritime transport, aviation, and logistics.
