5130 crimes against Ukrainians in six months: Poland strengthens investigations and creates special prosecutor groups

The Polish Ministry of Justice has created special groups in the prosecutor’s office that deal with investigating crimes committed on the grounds of national hatred. Special attention is given to cases of aggression against Ukrainians. More than 100 prosecutors have undergone special training and are already working on such cases.

This was reported on July 29 by the Polish Minister of Justice Waldemar Żurek on TVP Info. According to him, the authorities have been observing a rise in hatred not only towards Ukrainians but also towards representatives of other nationalities for several months.

„Przygotowaliśmy specjalny projekt w prokuraturze. Ponad 100 prokuratorów przeszło specjalne szkolenie w tej dziedzinie” – powiedział Żurek.

Most cases were closed earlier

According to the minister, an analysis of the prosecutor's office showed a worrying trend: there were many reports of crimes based on national grounds, but only a small portion of cases made it to court. Most proceedings were discontinued

“This was a problem for the prosecutor's office. That’s why we created such a group,” noted Żurek

According to him, after the restructuring of the prosecutor’s office, the situation began to change. In a short period, more than 280 indictments in similar cases have already been sent to the courts.

The minister also noted the effective cooperation between the prosecutor's office and the police. According to him, law enforcement agencies have become quicker at identifying and detaining suspects

“Incydent zdarza się pewnego dnia, a następnego dnia ta osoba jest już aresztowana, a wkrótce akt oskarżenia trafia do sądu,” powiedział Żurek. Dodał, że osobiście będzie monitorował pracę utworzonych grup prokuratorskich.

Over 5,000 crimes against Ukrainians

Statistics from the Polish National Police Headquarters show the scale of the problem. Since the beginning of 2026 and until early June, citizens of Ukraine have become victims of crimes 5130 times.

In comparison, throughout 2025, the police recorded 10,620 such cases. In 2024, there were 10,595 crimes registered, and the year before that — just over 11,000.
