On Sunday, August 9, actions will take place in Gdańsk and other cities in Poland under the slogan «Don’t be indifferent» (Nie bądź obojętny). Participants will stand against hatred, violence, and xenophobia towards Ukrainians and representatives of other nationalities.
In Gdańsk, the event will take place at 17:00 in front of the Artus Court. The organizers invite all residents of the city who want to express support for Ukrainians and representatives of other nationalities living in Poland.
The initiator of the nationwide campaign is the Committee for the Defense of Democracy (Komitet Obrony Demokracji, KOD) together with dozens of other civic organizations. The aim of the action is to publicly oppose the growing wave of hatred, insults, and aggression.
“As hate and violence against Ukrainians, as well as people of other nationalities in Poland, have reached unprecedented levels, it is time to say ‘enough’ to the spreading wave of fascism and xenophobia,” the organizers state.
According to them, Ukrainians in Poland are not only allies of the country in the face of Russian aggression but also an important part of society and the economy
“Allowing any acts of aggression against Ukrainians is not only a danger but also a serious question of whether we, as a society, are part of the democratic European civilization,” the statement says.
The organizers believe that the residents of Poland should openly show their solidarity — not only online but also in everyday life. As part of the campaign, it is suggested to use stickers, badges, and other symbols of support in public places, on cars, in offices, and at home.
“We believe that there are more people of good will in Poland than those who are guided by hatred and hostility towards refugees,” the organizers note, reminding of the wave of assistance to Ukrainians after the onset of the full-scale war in 2022.
