In Gdynia, over a ton of heroin was intercepted — the largest seized batch in the EU in recent years

In the port of Gdynia, Polish authorities discovered and seized over a ton of heroin. Estimates suggest its black market value is around 220 million zlotys. The authorities describe this as one of the largest such operations in recent years.

The smuggling was identified back in March, but the information was only disclosed now due to the ongoing investigation. According to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBŚP), officers, in cooperation with the customs and tax service, checked four containers that arrived from the UAE. According to the documents, they were supposed to contain decorative facing bricks.

However, upon inspection using X-rays and a service dog, it was found that drugs were hidden inside. This was confirmed by rapid tests. A total of over a ton of heroin was seized. Three individuals have been detained, and the investigation is ongoing.

According to the authorities, the operation was made possible thanks to international cooperation — information about the suspicious cargo was provided by British customs authorities.

At a press conference, the Minister of Finance, Andrzej Domanski, also addressed the case, noting that the smuggling prevented in March is one of the largest seizures not only in Poland’s history but also in the European Union.
